Ava Katz ‘26 has been a great addition to the Honors Sculpture program this year, bringing her creativity and talents to the class. What is especially impressive about Katz is her work outside of school; she designs and creates dresses in addition to her work in her sculpture class. She makes these creations for fun.
“I received a sewing machine when I was in third grade and began doing simple projects like making pajama pants, pillow cases and alterations,” Katz said. “When I needed a dress for a school dance, I couldn’t find any I liked, so I decided to make my own and ended up loving it. After that, I would sew a dress instead of buying one any chance I could.”
Katz’s dedication to her artwork is one of a kind, and it shows in the pieces that she creates. Her friends have also shown appreciation for her efforts in her artwork.
“It’s so impressive,” Emily Pokorny ‘26 said. “I know how long it takes her to make those dresses, and she spends so much time making sure everything is perfect.”
Her attention to detail shines through her pieces, and it is shown through her quick precision. She has the talent to make a beautiful dress in just a few days.
“My favorite project is the first dress I sewed,” Katz said. “It is a light pink dress with a ruffled bottom and off-the-shoulder arm piece. I had drawn a quick sketch a couple of days before homecoming and finished it the night before.”
Katz’s designs are one of a kind and not anything like what you would see in a retail store. She loves to create unique pieces, and she uses out-of-the-box techniques to create designs no one else would think of.
“I love creating unique pieces and styles you can’t find in a store,” Katz said. “I enjoy being able to combine multiple fabrics, styles, and techniques.”
Katz’s passion and joy for dress design further add to the impressive and inspiring nature of her work. She genuinely loves what she does, and that is why many people find her work inspiring.
“I find it inspiring how Ava makes dresses like these in her free time,” Pokorny said. “No one asks her to do it, not even many people know she can make art like that, and she does it because she genuinely enjoys it.”
Katz’s work has influenced the community, and she plans on continuing to use her talents in the future. Katz’s dedication, hard work, and creativity are major highlights of the GA art community.
