The house spaces are an integral part of the GA community. With at least two house spaces on each floor, students always have an area to sit down and relax.

“Every house space during break, lunch, or flex is always filled up with students just lounging on the couches, talking to their friends,” Sophia Song ‘27 said.

In addition to providing an area to socialize, the house spaces also reflect the long-standing house systems, with each lounge painted with the color of a different house. However, these house spaces are becoming increasingly outdated.

“The furniture that’s in there right now has been there for more than 10 years, and it’s held up pretty well,” Mr. Daniel Houston said. “But it’s looking like it’s been there for 10 years.”

Because of this, GA is in need of more updated House spaces. Luckily, GA will begin renovations as early as this summer, and it’s a plan that has been in the works for months.

The plan is to update the carpets and potentially the worn-down furniture. I think new couches are crucial to these renovations since they provide comfort that cannot be found anywhere else in the school.

To ensure this project’s success, the SGA Infrastructure Committee has been working with Mr. Moll and Mr. Samson over the past few months to go over various options.

In addition to SGA involvement, other students will be able to suggest their ideas via forms such as the Google form sent out earlier this year.

“One idea that was going around our committee was having student artists design the house space purpose to give it a very personalized house spirit,” Song said.

These forms will help bring together students from all over the community, and they bear a similarity to house decorating challenges. It also provides a sense of individuality and fosters house pride for the students who help design the space.

This project will improve the daily experience of many GA students. “To have an area that visually looks a bit better, hopefully will push students to take care of it more, which then, in turn, makes it look better at the end of each day,” Mr. Joe Taylor, Head of Washington House, said.

“It’ll give new GA students visitors a fresher view on our campus,” Song said. “It’ll definitely upgrade the spirits of our house.” As Song points out, this renovation will help attract potential new students while serving a purpose for the high school students.

With the renovations underway over the summer, the students will be greeted with updated house spaces going into the school year. These house renovations will show how much the students benefit from having updated areas
