Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, on Sunday, February 11th, 2024, saw the Kansas City Chiefs overcome a 10-point deficit to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime to become the first team to win back-to-back titles in the Super Bowl in 20 years.
After a back-and-forth game, regulation ended with a tie between the two teams at 19. In overtime, the Niners led 22–19 thanks to a field goal from Jake Moody that was 27 yards out. However, as he has done so many times before, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs down the field, and with 13 seconds remaining in overtime, he connected with receiver Mecole Hardman on a three-yard touchdown pass, winning the team their third Super Bowl in the previous five seasons and launching the team into a dynasty.
Jason Oswald, Computer Science Department Chair, is a Big Chiefs fan. When talking to Mr. Oswald, he shared his thoughts on the Super Bowl.
“As someone who grew up in Kansas City and who has been a Chiefs fan for as long as I can remember, I was thrilled with the outcome of the game,” Mr. Oswald said.
Mr. Oswald was really proud of the game the Chiefs played and how some of the players played.
“The Chiefs defense was really exceptional throughout the game with a lot of players—LaJarius Sneed, Chris Jones, Trent McDuffie, and George Karlaftis—coming up big in various moments, and obviously Patrick Mahomes really lifted the team on the final couple of offensive drives,” Mr. Oswald said.
Mr. Oswald also liked the fact that Taylor Swift was there and did not see it negatively. He thinks that it brings a new group of fans to the game.
“I personally find her presence at games and the emerging love story delightful and positive. It highlights the fact that both Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are people living their lives. It seems too easy these days to think of ‘Taylor Swift’ as an event or a ticket, or ‘Travis Kelce’ as someone who earns or loses you fantasy points instead of humans with agency and hopes,” Oswald said.
The Super Bowl was a fantastic game to watch, and even though some GA students or faculty’s favorite team did not win, we were happy to hear their thoughts!
