Luke Weidemoyer '23

Luke Weidemoyer ‘23 joined The Edition at the beginning of his sophomore year and began writing his monthly column, The Greatest Albums of All Time, with an article on Radiohead’s Kid A. He continued this album throughout the year, writing articles on albums such as Mitski’s Be The Cowboy and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, and took over the Album of the Month column at the end of the school year. Luke’s goal for the year is to focus on lyrical and musical analysis in the Album of the Month column. His favorite font is Garamond for its understated elegance.

Album of the Month: August 2021

August 2021 started as a very slow month for music releases, but soon picked up pace as the month neared its end. While not every album was a winner, there were still plenty of enjoyable releases to dive into. Some of my favorite music from the month includes the sombre neoclassical darkwave of Lingua Ignota’s […]

Album of the Month: July 2021

July 2021 wasn’t nearly as prolific of a month for music as May and June, but it still produced some very enjoyable projects. While I found some highly anticipated projects to be disappointing, including Logic’s return mixtape Bobby Tarantino III and the new album, Take The Sadness Out of Saturday Night, from Jack Antonoff’s solo […]

Album of the Month: June 2021

June 2021 was another great month for music, with possibly the most anticipated album of the year— Tyler, the Creator’s CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST—being released to critical acclaim. While the album was certainly among the highlights of the month for me, along with Backxwash’s dark industrial hip-hop on I LIE HERE BURIED WITH […]

Album of the Month: May 2021

May 2021 proved to be a very eventful month for music, with many of the year’s most highly anticipated projects being released, including Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour and Twenty One Pilots’ Scaled and Icy. While much of the music released this month was extremely impressive, such as the lush atmospheric black metal of Panopticon’s …and Again […]

Greatest Albums of All Time: Mitski’s Be The Cowboy

Mitski’s 2018 art-pop record Be The Cowboy can often feel less like an album and more like a collection of sketches. The project is quite short, clocking in at a slim 32 minutes, and only two of the fourteen tracks are over three minutes long. Each song has a very distinct style, with Mitski Miyawaki […]

Greatest Albums of All Time: Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories

Daft Punk built their career on contradiction. The group, which was recently dissolved, was made up of two musicians, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who performed an idiosyncratic blend of house and disco while wearing robot helmets. The helmets removed a layer of humanity from their music and performances by concealing the faces behind […]

Greatest Albums of All Time: 808s and Heartbreak

There’s a similar pattern that appears in many artist’s discographies. After releasing either a single monumental album (eg. Radiohead’s OK Computer) or a string of highly successful albums (eg. Kanye West’s The College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation), an artist will frequently seek to reinvent themself, both musically and aesthetically. As I’ve previously written about […]
Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly

Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly

For the optimal experience, we recommend you listen along while reading this article! In 2012, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was at the top of the world. He had just released his sophomore studio album, good kid, m.A.A.d city and it had done incredibly well, both commercially and critically. Debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 […]
