In the GA community, nutrition is crucial for student athletes’ performance and overall well-being. The connection between food choice and athletic success continues to be a topic of discussion between coaches and athletes; these choices impact both practice experiences and game outcomes.
At Germantown Academy, the culinary team prioritizes a variety of nutritious meals. The cafeteria provides options such as salads, sandwiches, sushi and more. The meal planning team focuses on foods that include proteins, grains, and vegetables.
Nutrition is particularly important before practice, games, and other competitions.
“I have to make sure it’s food that’s going to keep me energized throughout the day,” diver Maddie Evers ‘26 said. “I also have to make sure I’m eating enough because I’m at school from 7:45 until 9 at night.”
The life of a student-athlete is often hectic. This is why meal prepping can be very important if they want to eat a balanced meal.
“I meal prep on Sundays for the week so I’m not rushing to pack it that morning,” Evers said. “Meal prepping allows me to focus on other things throughout the day.”
Nutrition strategies shift between the competitive season and the off-season. During the season, athletes focus on maintaining energy and performance capability.
Coaches at GA also play a big role in guiding athletes towards better eating habits. Nutrition tends to be just as crucial as the physical practice aspect of a sports team.
Overall, the GA community is committed to promoting nutrition in order to better the lives of student-athletes. From the chefs to the coaches, and most importantly the student-athletes, everyone can benefit from a proper diet.
