Rob Eppinger embraces heritage through dance

From the time he was three years old, Rob Eppinger ‘25 has enjoyed practicing and performing his German dancing for others.

“It’s fun and feels great to see how much people enjoy our entertainment,” Eppinger said.

Eppinger has devoted much of his life to the style of German dance The Schuhplattler. It is a traditional style of folk dance. In fact, 2024 marks Eppinger’s 13th year celebrating his family’s tradition.

Eppinger first became interested in dance as a result of this tradition and his father’s experience dancing from a young age.

“My dad pushed me into dancing when I was little, as it was a massive part of his life,” Eppinger said. “Having done it for a little under 50 years, he wanted me to grow up doing what he loved too.”

Being part of the dance community has given Eppinger many fun opportunities that he would not have otherwise.

“I plan to continue attending events held by different groups as much as possible, most notably going to Munich to march in the Oktoberfest Parade with my groups as special guests for our 100th anniversary,” Eppinger said.

Eppinger’s group is a set of people with a common interest in dancing. He meets with them often.

Through his dancing, Eppinger has had the opportunity to partake in various competitions and perform for the students and faculty at GA. Eppinger takes pride in being able to show his fellow students his skills, and GA students appreciate his talent and passion for dance.

Specifically, Eppinger performed at GA’s Oktoberfest Celebration. This event was a commemoration of German heritage and featured various performances and traditional German food.

Evidently, dancing is a tradition that connects Eppinger to both his family as well as his heritage. Eppinger expressed his joy in celebrating his German heritage with his classmates, peers, and other audience members.

Unfortunately, Eppinger will have to take a hiatus in college due to the distance from his dance group, but hopes to continue to practice in the future.

“I fully intend to continue practicing post-college,” Eppinger said.
