This year’s spring sports season featured a near return to pre-pandemic normalcy. With a much higher number of people vaccinated and COVID cases dropping, GA athletes were able to practice maskless, participate in their usual competitions and games, and have spectators! Even though there was a brief spike in COVID cases late in the season, athletes were still able to excel in their competitions. All spring sports teams competed and did extremely well. 

Girls’ lacrosse has had a great season so far with a record of 6-8 with two games and the PIASAA tournament on their horizon. Heidi Cross ‘22, Mia Raven ‘23, Lucia Smigiel 24’, Maggie Borek 24’, and Emma Goodwin 24’ were all frequent scorers this season. Sadie Hess 25’ was an excellent addition to the team this season as a goalie and was able to average a whopping 10 saves a game. Overall, all the players have put in the work this season and it is clearly paying off. Congratulations to the girls’ lacrosse team!

The crew team has had an amazing season so far, despite having a few canceled regattas. Additionally, the team still has the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, City Championships, and SRAA Scholastic Nationals before the season comes to an end. First-year rower Jennifer Durnall ‘24 said, “It was a great experience for me! For pretty much all the other sports I’ve done, I haven’t felt connected to the team. Or not on the level I did with the people in the JV8+.” She goes on to say, “I saw a lot of improvement personally. Other people saw lots of improvement as well. The team atmosphere is great, everyone is really supportive.” In addition to maintaining incredible team spirit throughout the season, the team had some notable highlights. Haiden Bonczek ’23 took first in the Boys Gig/Novice 1x with a time of  5:55.060 which was 30 seconds faster than second. Umang Mittal ’25, Maloy Lafferty ’25, Utsav Mittal ’25 and Jack Wescott ’25 won their heat of the Boys Novice 4x with a time of 5:11.410. Olivia Shafer ’23, Sarah Beth Sandifer ’23, Ryleigh Dougherty ’23, and Aisosa Idahosa ’23 placed first in their heat of the Girls JV 4x, crossing the finish line in 5:35.650. Congratulations to the crew team!

The track and field team is nearing the end of an intense season having just finished the Inter-Ac championships with only the PAISAA Track Championships remaining. Though the team was not able to secure the overall win in the Inter-Ac championships, all runners and field athletes performed very well in their divisions and were able to persevere continuously throughout the very rainy competition day. The new long? distance coach, Mr. Jennings Senior (AKA Sensei) said, “It has been an enjoyable track season. I enjoyed the additional responsibility of leading the distance group, designing the workouts, and seeing their improvement.” Congratulations to all the track and field athletes!

Softball has had a noteworthy season with an overall record of 8-6 and still has the PAISAA Tournament before the end of the season. A few of their most impressive games were their 20-0 win against Germantown Friends School, their 12-5 win against Agnes Irwin School, and their 17-3 win against Academy of Notre Dame De Namur. Even in the games they lost, the players were able to keep the game close. Overall, if the softball team’s record tells us anything, it’s that they had a great season. Congratulations to all softball players!

Boys’ lacrosse had a great season with a tied record of 8-8. They still have the IALL Semi-Finals and Championships before their season comes to a close. Some of their most notable games were their 12-1 win against Episcopal Academy, their 16-4 win vs. Pennridge High School, and their 11-3 win vs. Central Bucks High School East. Though they have had quite a few definite wins, the team has also had a number of relatively close games that have all ended in a hard-earned victory– a13-11 win against Perkiomen School and a 12-11 win against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Overall, the Boys’ lacrosse team has had an exceptional season. Congratulations to all the boys’ lacrosse players!

Boys’ tennis has certainly put in the work to have a highly successful season this year. They were able to maintain an outstanding record of 11-1. Their only defeat was from the Haverford School at a score of 3-4 in the early season, but they were able to knock down Haverford in their last game of the season with an end score of 5-2, winning the interact. Congratulations to all tennis players!

Baseball has had a tough, but solid season so far with a record of 6-11. They still have 4 games remaining along with the PAISAA Tournament in late May. Their most dramatic win was against the Westtown School with a crushing score of 20-2. In all of their games, they were able to keep their opponents at bay and maintained an average 2 to 3 point difference in the scores of their lost games. Overall, the baseball team has had a fantastic season. Congratulations to all baseball players!

Sports have always been a great way for students to ease their stress from academic classes and build friendships based on similar interests. The GA upper school had a successful return to a normal spring sports season this year after two years of seasons heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
