As we welcome signs of spring in just a few weeks, Phillies fans are eagerly anticipating some good news about the 2021 season. With the recent steady decline in coronavirus cases across Pennsylvania, many fans are hopeful that they might be able to walk the Park on Opening Day. The Citizens Bank Park Stadium seats 43,000 fans, but the pandemic could once again throw them a curveball.
So far, officials are still in the process of making the tough calls about fan capacity without having to tell fans, “You’re out.” The city is carefully reviewing all possible scenarios in order to follow state regulations and avoid a change up. Since the restrictions seem to hit fast and hard, it is unlikely there will be any changes with regard to dining. Although if the current fan capacity increases, it could mean a home run for the city’s economy, the players, and the entire Phillies organization. The change would require the approval of not only the city’s administration but also Governor Wolf. The current policy limits the number of people to 2500, including players and staff since it is an outdoor event. If the swing for an additional fan base turns out to be a miss, another season could be a virtual experience for loyal Phillies fans.
Even if the move is forfeited, fans will find a way to support the team; playing by the rules might require technology, which isn’t always a walk in the park. If the restrictions are lifted, masks, social distancing, and limited seating will still be in play. Phillies Manager, Joe Girardi, recently was interviewed saying, “I would love it,” that is if fans were able to be at the game on April 1. No, this is no April Fools’ joke. Fans anxiously await the decision for thumbs up to play ball with real spectators rather than life-size cardboard placeholders.
As we round the bases concerning the coronavirus pandemic, the hope is that we can gather in large crowds once again. Thus far, the decision regarding fans at the Park is still being reviewed; although the call seems promising. According to Health Commissioner, Thomas Farley, “I can’t guarantee anything, but it is likely that there will be some fans in the stands at the Phillies home opener.” It’s hard to believe that it’s been one year since fans had to sit this game out. But, on the bright side, if the Park is off-limits to fans in person, maybe while watching at home, we can enjoy some peanuts and cracker jacks!
