Looking for a scary movie to watch to get in the Halloween spirit? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of movies recommended by GA students:
Sean Lipschutz ‘22 is a big fan of scary movies and recommends Paranormal Activity because the ending “scared the pants off of him.” In Paranormal Activity, a couple moves into a new home and starts sensing supernatural presence; they set up cameras at night to see if they are right about their suspicions.
Sophie Towne ‘21 has not seen a lot of scary movies, but of the ones she has seen, Devil is her favorite. Devil is about 5 strangers who get stuck in an elevator and soon find out that one of them is the devil himself; it gave Sophie “nightmares for weeks.”
Charlotte Dilello ‘21 is a big fan of a different type of scary movie: Scary Movie. Yes, that is the movie title. It is a parody of the horror genre and makes fun of a few famous horror movie scenes.
A popular scary movie choice is It, the movie based off of the terrifying clown from the Stephen King novel. Dane Wetzel ‘22 likes It because it is a “good mix between horror and comedy.”
Livi Merrill ‘22 recommends The Conjuring. She says it is insanely scary and she could “watch it three times in a row and still be scared.” The Conjuring is supposedly based on a true story where a family with five daughters moves into a new home and, you guessed it, start feeling a ghostly presence. The family asks two paranormal investigators to examine their house, and the movie just gets more horrifying from there.
For Ali Ruane ‘23, one of her favorite scary movies is The Corpse Bride, a Tim Burton movie that explores a gothic romance between the undead and the living. She also enjoys classics like Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, saying “I honestly just love [those films] because they were childhood favorites for me. I grew up with them and they’re still fun to watch even as I get older.” In her eyes, The Nightmare Before Christmas is an especially good one because “you never really know what category to put it under, Halloween, or Christmas ~ but I think that’s what makes it even better.”
Elizabeth Riley ‘22 comments that Coraline is an interesting film as well. Because she hasn’t seen a lot of Halloween movies, the Henry Selick film stuck out to her as a “fun and spooky” watch. Coraline is based off of the Neil Gaiman book by the same name.
As for Christine Sfida ‘23, Halloweentown has got to be her “all-time favorite” due to how festive of a movie it is. She loves the “good vibes” it gives out and says that “everything about it is just perfect.” Halloweentown portrays a normal family on the outside, coming home to discover that they come from a lineage of witches. One fateful night, the family sets off to fight the evil that has the potential to take over the world. Similar to Ali’s thoughts on The Nightmare Before Christmas, Christine believes that watching Halloweentown was a staple of her childhood, giving Halloween its meaning and importance.
Hope you enjoy watching some of these movies to celebrate spooky season!
Spooky! Scary movie marathon, anyone?
