The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented for the whole globe: health code regulations took a huge turn, and human society was forced into a very tedious quarantine. Face masks have been the biggest change in daily life, as they have become compulsory in every public space in Pennsylvania and many other states. When the virus first started to proliferate, pharmacies and online carriers ran out of conventional cotton face masks very quickly, causing the prices to increase. However, stay-at-home orders and the temporary closing of many businesses allowed manufacturers to catch up and evenly distribute masks to the public.

There are various creative designs for masks, including patterns, screen-printed faces, or even clear openings to aid those hard of hearing. In particular, Maya Altimany (Class of ‘22) saw this pandemic as an outlet to produce and distribute customized masks for the public. Her main forum of communication has been via Instagram and direct messaging on the app. She charges anywhere from $8-$10 for each mask, and discounts apply when multiple masks are ordered.
